Health Care Workers in BC

Health care is a human industry. New technologies and innovation may be transforming the way health care is delivered, but the people who work in our hospitals, clinics and care facilities remain our health care system’s greatest assets.

British Columbia’s health care system is supported by more than 120,000 public sector employees working under five major collective agreements. As the accredited bargaining agent for most publicly funded health employers in the province, HEABC negotiates collective agreements covering nurses, health science professionals, physician residents, and support workers in both facility (hospitals and care homes) and community settings.

Evidence-based planning is a vital part of making sure British Columbia’s health care system has the human resources needed both today and in the future.

To support this planning, HEABC collects data on the employment characteristics of BC’s public sector health care workers. This information is used by employers and policy makers to support health care resource and workforce planning. Data is from 2013 unless otherwise noted.
