E-Learning Modules

Health Authority & Providence Health Care Employees

All health authority and Providence Health Care employees must complete these modules on their employer’s Learning Management System (LMS) to ensure credit is received for completing the curriculum. Please see the links below for more information and/or to be redirected to your employer's LMS site:

Affiliate Employees, Students, and other non-Health Authority Learners

Each of the eight e-learning modules can be accessed by clicking the links below. Once you have completed the quiz embedded in each module, you will be able to print your results. Please print the results for each module completed and submit them to your manager for record-keeping.

Note: Please complete the e-learning modules in order. 

Module 1: Introduction to Violence Prevention

This module introduces learners to the organizational and worker responsibilities that make up part of a comprehensive violence prevention program. It also introduces them to the Provincial Violence Prevention Curriculum Framework.

Learning Objectives

  • Define violence
  • Recognize the impact of violence on health care workers
  • Identify employer and worker roles and responsibilities related to violence prevention
  • Identify the Provincial Violence Prevention Curriculum framework and its components

Complete Module 1

Module 2: Recognize Risks and Behaviours

In this module, learners gain awareness of the risk factors, stressors, and behaviours that may lead to a violent situation.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the risk factors and stressors for violence
  • Identify signs of an emotional crisis and a behavioural emergency
  • Identify the relationship between threat and brain function
  • Identify self-settling strategies

Complete Module 2

Module 3: Assess and Plan Part 1 – Complete Point-of-Care Risk Assessments

In this module, participants will learn to proactively assess risk by completing quick, informal assessments for violence prior to, and during, any task or interaction.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the components of a point-of-care risk assessment (PCRA), when to use it, and why it is important
  • Complete a point-of-care risk assessment
  • Decide if it is safe to proceed

Complete Module 3 

Module 4: Assess and Plan Part 2 – Develop Behavioural Care Plans

In this module, participants will learn how to formally assess the risk of violence and complete a behavioural care plan, which is used to inform all staff about the risk of violence for a specific person and to recommend approach and safety precautions.

  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate behavioural care plans (BCP)

Complete Module 4

Module 5: Respond to the Risk Part 1 – Perform De-escalation - Communication

In this module, participants will learn how respectful communication can be used to prevent escalation or defuse an emotional crisis before it becomes a behavioural emergency.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe why effective communication strategies are important
  • Define de-escalation
  • Describe how to prevent violence and deescalate a person having an emotional crisis with
  • - Non-verbal communication
    - Vocal communication
    - Verbal communication

Complete Module 5

Module 6: Respond to the Risk Part 2 – Perform De-escalation Strategies

In this module, participants will focus on additional strategies they can use to respond to an emotional crisis to prevent it from becoming a behavioural emergency, such as providing time and space, redirection, distraction, providing options, and providing co-worker support.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe how to safely approach a person
  • Explain when and how to use various de-escalation strategies
  • Identify how to respond to tension reduction

Module 7: Respond to the Risk Part 3 – Determine When and How to Get Help

In this module, participants will learn when and how to call for help to keep themselves and others safe in response to a behavioural emergency.

  • Know when to call for help
  • Identify actions to keep yourself and others safe
  • Know how to call for help

Complete Module 7

Module 8: Report and Communicate Post-Incident

In this module, participants will learn what they need to do following an incident and what they can expect from their manager/supervisor.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify what you need to do post-incident
  • Report violent incidents (even if there is no injury)
  • Update and communicate the risk and interventions to co-workers and across the health care continuum
  • Re-establish relationships with persons in your care
